Ezra 8:
- What dangerous times these were. Not to mention, the older men probably remember the brutal slaughter they endured decades earlier. Now they will travel hundreds of miles with many valuables (vs. 25-30) through territories inhabited by antagonistic peoples. In addition, Ezra has already boasted to the king of the protective power of God. (vs. 22) It seems that Ezra may be getting 11th hour cold feet. For he calls the crowd to fast and pray before they begin this journey. (vs. 21 & 23) God was kind and merciful, allowing them to make it to Jerusalem without incident. (vs. 31)
- LORD, be merciful to me as I journey on the path You have called me to walk. Let me boast of Your power, but with a humble fear that seeks Your favor in spite of what I deserve.
