Numbers 36:
- Considering big, eternal realities, it’s odd to me how much discussion of property ownership is entertained by the LORD. Especially considering the commendable perspective of the oppressed believers in Hebrews 10:34 who “joyfully accepted the plundering of [their] property,” knowing that they had an eternal possession in the coming Kingdom. Still, the LORD seems invested in this real estate acquisition.
- Was it to appease Israel’s covetous hearts? (I doubt it.) Was it merely to keep His promise to Abraham (Gen. 12:1-3)? Maybe He is concerned about His reputation before the other nations? Or could it be simply for the survival of His covenant children?
- God is the Master Multitasker! He could be accomplishing all of these purposes (and more!) at the same time. Is this not what He did at the Cross? Condemn sin. Reveal His character. Satisfy our due punishment. Set us free! Equip us with the Holy Spirit. Demonstrate love via sacrifice. Unify the family of faith. Establish the Church. And much more!
LORD, I confess that I often do not know why You do what You do. But I have seen enough to trust Your character and Your wisdom. Help me to remember this when the confusing things of life overwhelm me.
